Report on the First International Conference on Medical Imaging and Case Reports (MICR-2018)
This article summarizes the three-day program of presentations, panel discussions and interactive dialogue at the first International Conference on Medical Imaging & Case Reports (MICR-2018). The conference took place from 29 to 31 October 2018 at DoubleTree by Hilton Baltimore -BWI Airport, Baltimore, MD and was hosted by United Scientific Group (USG) (A non-profit organization*), an expert-driven initiative led by the editor’s association and the advisory board which includes academicians, researchers, and industry leaders across various fields of research. USG provides broad range of services in the fields of science and technology including publishing, conducting world class scientific events, and holding highly interactive and proficient world forums.
The main aim of the conference was to provide timely, evidence-based information that helps radiologists, sonographers, medical physicists, clinicians, biomedical engineers and allied experts with new research and innovations in medical imaging and advance quality diagnosis in patient care. MICR is focused to introduce the latest achievements, technologies and breakthroughs in Medical Imaging to all healthcare practitioners.
The event brought together some 70 radiologists, academicians, sonographers, medical physicists, nurses, clinicians, biomedical engineers and allied experts in Medical Imaging from 48 organizations and 23 countries to discuss on the
latest scientific advances, technologies and breakthroughs in the field of medical imaging.
The conference began with opening remarks by Vice-President of USG Dr. Sudhakar Yakkanti and continued with keynote presentations.
Day 1: The first day (October 29, 2018) of the conference is filled with some very exciting Keynote presentations. The session started with talk of Dr. Rajendra D. Badgaiyan-Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NY, on a new technique called Neurotransmitter Imaging, followed by oration of Dr. Martha E. Shenton-Director, Psychiatry Neuroimaging Laboratory, Harvard Medical School, MA, on how the advances in neuroimaging have revolutionized the understanding of human brain. Dr. Michael Miller-Director, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, MD addressed about AI and brain clouds in medical imaging. Dr. Susan C. Harvey-Director of Breast Imaging, The Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, JHM, MD addressed the strategies for decreasing screening mammography recall rates. The next keynote was delivered by Dr. Rene Vidal-Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, MD on machine learning for interpreting biomedical data, followed by Dr. Jinah Park-School of Computing, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea presenting the deformable modeling research work applied for various organ structures of brain.
The post-lunch session kicked off with a talk delivered by Dr. Polina Golland-Professor, EECS Department, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MA on medical image imputation, followed by session of Dr. Jeff W. M. Bulte-Director of Cellular Imaging, The Johns Hopkins Institute for Cell Engineering, MD on key role of medical imaging in stem cell therapy and Dr. Terry S. Yoo-School of Computing and Information Science, University of Maine, ME spoke on lightweight technology for interventional medicine. Day 1 was concluded with the session by Dr. Jeffrey H. Siewerdsen-Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Johns Hopkins University, MD on the advances in intraoperative imaging and registration for image-guided interventions.
Day 2: Second day (October 30, 2018) has started with another keynote by Dr. Kevin S. Zhou-Professor, Institute
of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China addressing machine learning and knowledge modelling approaches in medical imaging. Continuing high spirits after keynotes, it was time for Technical Sessions-Neuroradiology and Diagnostic Imaging; Cancer Imaging and Nuclear Medicine; Machine Learning, Medical Imaging and Analysis. These sessions covered a wide range of topics in the field of medical imaging including Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Neuroradiology, Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography, Ultrasound Imaging, Computer Aided Diagnosis, MR fluoroscopy, Radiograph etc.
Day 3: Final Day (October 31, 2018) of the conference continued the technical sessions on Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Imaging. The speaker presentations in these sessions mainly focused on the topics Elastography, Image-Guided Surgery, MR-Venography, Sonourethrography.
Poster/Virtual Presentations: MICR-2018 had an interactive poster session and displayed posters throughout the conference. MICR has also presented speakers with an opportunity of virtual presentations/posters to give their talk electronically. After the successful event, MICR-2018 was concluded with a closing ceremony and certificate distribution.
The conference also provided a valuable networking opportunity and set the stage to share ideas and valuable
concepts. The idea was to give students, young researchers/doctors, speakers an opportunity to interact with some eminent people in the field and with each other to discuss, share their knowledge and get exposed to new trends in medical imaging.
